ultimate edition films

A while back I pre-ordered the Blu-ray versions of the "Ultimate Edition" or whatever they're calling it of Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. In the process of proving last night that the thing in the Fry's ad which showed a set of all five films on Blu-ray was not this edition, but just a boxed set of the films, I noticed that the "Ultimate Edition" is also available on DVD for about ten bucks cheaper.

I thought well, there must be something extra on the Blu-ray version, or maybe I didn't know I had a choice. I looked at both pages on Amazon, though, and aside from the fact that the Blu-ray crams both the theatrical and extended cuts on a single disc whereas that takes up two discs in the regular DVD version (3 discs and 4 discs total, respectively), I couldn't see any difference.

The television that is hooked up to our Blu-ray player (read: our PS3) is, um, kind of the opposite of HD, so while we can watch Blu-ray discs we don't get to see any of the actual benefit of buying in that format. So unless there's something different about the content, there's really no reason for me to pay the extra money.

Can someone reality check me here, and make sure there's not something I'm missing? Because if not, I think I'll cancel the Blu-ray order and go for DVD instead.

from a recent post by Wil Wheaton:

I've been struggling lately to turn a lot of ideas I have into actual stories. I kind of feel like my writing mojo has taken a temporary leave of absence, and the harder I look for it, the harder it is to find. It has been incredibly frustrating.

This morning, in Warren Ellis' BAD SIGNAL e-mail, he said:
At least half of all writing involves just sitting and staring into space. Letting your brain out to hunt down ideas, bringing them back all warm and bloody between its teeth.
This is something that I knew to be true, but had temporarily forgotten. As writers, it's vital that we meet our deadlines, of course, but we also have to build time into our work schedule to read books, take walks, visit doctor whisky, play with our dogs, and do the other things that may not look or feel like work, but are integral to our creative process.

The image of one's brain as a cat or hunting hound bringing back warm, bloody game was amusing. Also, IHNJ, IJLS "doctor whisky". lol.

discussion on fanfic and copyright

This doesn't sound right to me. Despite the OP's having "talked to a copyright lawyer" and "looked it up" (re: US copyright law) I think there may be some misunderstanding and also some mixing up of copyright and trademark. My understanding is that when I write a story featuring Harry Potter at Hogwarts or anything else recognizable from the series, yes, I am making use of someone else's intellectual property without permission, i.e., I am infringing on JKR's rights (setting aside for the moment arguments that fanfiction should be considered either 1. parody or 2. transformative enough to be protected also, edit: "use of property w/o permission" =/= "infringement" under all circumstances, obviously, and I didn't mean to imply such; I was referring to this specific kind of use, and whether it is "transformative" or merely "derivative" and therefore typically requiring of authorization remains undecided). But the specific sequence of words I choose to set down my plots and descriptions, isn't that copyright mine as soon as I manifest it, like any other work? For example:

"I was just curious," she continued in the same low voice, and let one corner of her mouth quirk in what she hoped was a cutely mysterious fashion. (She was only eighteen, after all, and just starting to learn the fine art of seducing eighteen-year-old boys, something which was probably easier than she suspected at the time.) "I wanted to... I wanted to see you."

That's an excerpt from one of my Lily/Severus fics. Is this passage magically the property of JKR because I happened to use characters recognizable as her creation? (notice that they are not named here, although they are elsewhere) She (or her agent) can tell me to cease & desist and/or claim damages, but that doesn't transfer the production/distribution rights to her, does it? It just means that her right to dictate how her intellectual property is used trumps my right to produce/distribute my own (infringing) work?

edit: Long story short, I'm correct that those rights don't somehow lie with the creator of the original work, and the OP has since corrected herself (nothing to do with me, I didn't comment there). Those interested in this topic may like to read [info - personal] elf's comments on the subject on my DreamWidth post, since she's someone I consider very knowledgeable about this sort of thing (dare I say, immersed in it).

So sweet. I love Severus's glasses and apparent age and the contented familiarity in him ruffling Harry's hair.

Connichi 2009 - poking Snape
by ~HowellJenkinsSama on deviantART

There are some other photos of this interesting Snape cosplay as well. Normally I would say that nose prosthesis takes it over the top into slightly cruel caricature, but somehow it really brings this particular costume together.

The Long Road
by ~TGP on deviantART

I loved the moody colour and how a frightened child grows into a sullen teenager, a disaffected adult, and then a total mystery with his back turned to the viewer. Very simply drawn but quite effective.

The Banes of Her Existence

This made me LOL IRL. Just look at Severus and Minerva's poses and expressions, and Albus's drink with the umbrella! Poor woman, being headmistress and sharing an office with those two...

fandom top five

I've been sitting on these for a while not feeling very articulate or creative. Not that I do right now either, of course, but I'd rather they were out of my inbox without the total cop-out of just deleting them outright. So I give you one of the Fandom Top Fives I was asked back in September.

from [info]janus:
5 fave wizarding artefacts (includes sweets).

I don't know if you meant to include things like potions in this, but I'm going to include one.

Amortentia -- I think the way it smells different to each person and telltale of the object of their affections is neat. I wonder, though, does that mean that if two people are each in love with the same person, does it smell the same to each of them? Or could there be some variation based on what each person personally associated with the object? And would it change if you got dosed with it? I.e., if person A gives Amortentia to person B, would the scent of it change from hinting at person C to person A for the duration? And what if there's no one in particular you're attached to at the moment -- do the scents somehow symbolize what you're attracted to in general? (Or is that what it's doing anyway?)

The Knight Bus -- It's wacky and all, but it's really a very impressive feat of wizarding engineering when you think of all the spells that must be involved in its operation.

The Marauder's Map -- Ethical implications aside, how genius do you have to be to cook up that kind of magic when you're ~16?

Pensieve -- Being able to replay memories like recordings would be great. None of this degenerating "Well, I think it went like this, but um, I don't really remember..." business.

Fred & George's Daydream Charms -- Thirty minutes, wow! Hard to find time for that in my day nowadays. I wonder how much control the user has over the content.

Rebecca Johnson is your worst nightmare. Sirius Black is every girl's dream boy. They say that opposites attact... but that's just one part of this couples' story.

[info]elethian: So... Rebecca is the opposite of Sirius? And a Black is the opposite of a Johnson?

[info]enotsola: That's not the way I hear it.

(please also note the title of this fic: Salviles Severus Salazar Tobias Prince Snape)

This a story about Severus Snape and Febrir Snape's son. Fenrir Grayback is nice and not a werewolf and not a deatheater.

And heck, just not Fenrir Greyback.

Also i change his apprince and personality. He is considered a female so he can bear children like any female.

Wouldn't it have been faster to start from scratch, rather than disassembling an existing character and putting him back together all backwards and upside-down?

I just saw a summary on FFN that mentioned Harry's godmother coming to fetch him when Sirius died. Obviously this is an OC and no such person is mentioned in canon, but it's an interesting idea; godparents usually come in pairs. Who do you think might have been Harry's godmother, if anyone?

LOL, [info - livejournal.com] wrisomifu. For those who can't hack NaNoWriMo, there is Write Something You Miserable Fuck! Never mind novels or fic, just do 10 minutes a day of whatever crap you can possibly squeeze out.

...How sad is it that I know I can't even do that? (because despite it being permitted, I know you don't want 10 minutes a day of shopping lists.)

Harry finds his true love in the most unlikely place. Will he be able to have the woman of his heart or will he be doomed to live a life of Unrequited Love.

Sorry, Harry, but there's only room in this series for one dark-haired hero carrying a huge torch for an unattainable woman.

5. Severus/Regulus

7. Sirius/Regulus

9. Severus/Lucius

THREE SHIPS I'VE NEVER LIKED:

Just a random thought about the way I use sarcasm and its double-edged application --

One might think at my response to this something like "Hey, she was just trying to be encouraging; couldn't you have said something nice?"

Then it occurred to me that for me, that was saying something nice. It was affectionate, even; a kind of inside-out, smirky, eyebrow-raised way of saying that I was genuinely amused by the image she conjured as well as its metaphorical meaning. The sarcastic remark unpadded by any "j/k"s or other such things was, effectively, a play-bite.

I do it in all kinds of (non-"weapon") situations, too, from reassuring myself of the camaraderie of an established friendship to approaching someone of new sexual interest. This latter may seem especially odd -- snarking at someone you may want to fool around with? -- but I think it's something of a peacock display (a drab and prickly one, I grant) coupled with testing for the presence of my own peculiar ideas of what is desirable in a mate of any stripe. If they, too, are capable of communicating like this then 1) I'm probably not going to put them off by doing it and 2) I'm more likely to like talking to them as well as just staring at their sweet flesh from across the room.

(Telling this apart from usage actually meant to sting, especially online, may be something else again -- a subtle science and an exact art, to coin a phrase...)

I am in the mood for the following things and would like some recs plzkthx:

1. Long lovely languid sensual descriptions (and/or sex to the same tune) featuring Severus and one or more of the following: Lily, Sirius, Regulus, Harry, Draco, Lucius, Sinistra, James (ha! that'll be the day), Remus (willing to give it a go in this case), an OC of either sex (ditto, although actually I've relaxed my attitude on main-character OC's a lot since 2 years ago), or even Hermione (*shock* who am I and what have I done with [info]elethian?). Don't let the pairing alone necessarily stop you if it's not one of these; I might give other things a shot too. Bonus points for mild alcohol/drug use or equivalent potion/magical effect.

2. Dark fic with self-harm and/or suicide (but not direct depiction of any non-con, please; dub-con and mention of non-con are ok. In fact some nice mindfucking dub-con might go well with this as a wine pairing). This is something I usually click away from in an eyerolling hurry with Severus as I just cannot really see him as the kind of person to do this no matter how depressed he got, but for some reason I feel like sinking myself into a blue emo funk right now.

<10k words preferred but I am capable of skimming through other things to get to the scenes I want to read in a longer fic.

About five and a half months ago I did a post similar to my summaries ones where I riffed on some unusual Yahoo groups descriptions unearthed with the keyword "Snape". [info]lilyevans_snape wanted me to do more, please, but that batch had exhausted the 478 results for that keyword (at the time) and I figured I'd get something overwhelming if I actually typed in "Harry Potter". Well, today I happened to be rereading that post, and wondered idly just what I would get, and how long would it take me to sift through and make a summary-execution-like post for "Harry Potter". So I went to groups.yahoo.com and made to type that in, when lo and behold, Yahoo had already suggested a search for me:

So maybe it was meant to be.

This search does, however, yield 10,219 results just now, so don't hold your collective breath. I think I may take a stab at it, but it'd be many hours' hard slogging to actually go through them all.

(NB the last search term is "crock-pot", not "crack-pot" as I first read, although that word would likely apply.)

I saw Shacklebolt misspelled as "Shacklebot" in a fic the other day.

Ahem, yes, well. That's different...

-----

In other news, I was awakened around 3:30 this morning by the sound of a few very large drops of rain on the metal of the camper roof out in the yard. I had just been dreaming of making out quite steamily with Draco (who was not Tom Felton but seemed to have raided movie!Draco's wardrobe, as I have a sneaking suspicion he was in black Armani) and was thus so disoriented that my first thought about what the plinking sound could be was that someone was frying dry lentils and popping them like popcorn.
