[i]cluegirl: And in the caves, all cats are grey...

Only in the chilly house, all cats are white. And in a pile, right beside me on the sofa.

Godric was there first, then Cyrene decided he needed a cuddle, so she came in and sat on his head. Then Sirocco realized that the triumverate of white kitties was incomplete without her, and climbed on top.

The tolerance is... kind of alarming, actually. I've been able to get up and sit back down twice without anybody realizing they'd been busted tolerating the rest, and lashing out. This cannot last... but until someone runs off cryin, I'm going to enjoy the cute overload.

[i]janus: Advent Drabbles: Dec. 10 A Prize, a Hat and a Motto

December 10, 2009
Title: A Prize, a Hat and a Motto
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Regulus, Sirius, Narcissa, Andromeda, Bella
Rating: G
Words: 400
Prompt: Christmas Crackers

There were many traditions at the Black family Yuletide dinner, but a favourite of both boys had always been the Christmas crackers. They sold special wizarding crackers in Diagon Alley, and these were elaborate and popular, especially among the better families. Kreacher had been sent to purchase them, after he had consulted with an eager and happy Regulus. His brother was at school.

They were green with a net of old silver filigree thread. The whole family and their cousins crossed their arms around the table to pull the crackers together. Their old servant clapped his hands excitedly. Clouds of smoke shot through with green and silver sparks exploded, glittering with ribbons of light, accompanied by a clash of silver cymbals.

At every plate fell a simple silver instrument. A green and silver hat appeared on each head, and a scroll of cream parchment unrolled before each member of the family.

Regulus had a mouth organ, Sirius a silver penny-whistle. Narcissa had a xylophone, Andromeda a handful of bells, and Bella a tambourine. Sirius took off his green hat, throwing it down by his plate and turning it rebellious red. He looked at his brother's prize. Ever the peace-maker, Regulus offered him the mouth organ, by far the better instrument to Sirius' mind, he knew.

Ever since he had been Sorted, their parents had looked askance at their elder son, favouring the younger. Regulus was perceptive and regretful. Even if he had made foolish choices, Sirius was still his brother. He would come around, Regulus was sure.

"I already have one," Sirius tossed him the whistle as he slammed his way out of the room. "Here's your extra little toy!"

There should have been a band, and the girls were tentatively experimenting. Even Andromeda was included, though Narcissa, cool and simply quiet, had interjected herself between her sisters. Why did Sirius have to be so... dogmatic? Family was family to the younger boy, as it seemed to be to Narcissa. Strange, he thought. Though they would hate to admit it, Sirius most resembled Bella with his temper, his misplaced will and his strange battles.

He tried the little pipe and the sound was pure, piping and high. The notes seemed to lilt and ripple. It would have been beautiful, but it was tainted now by Sirius' bitterness. Regulus mourned already. His motto read mockingly:

Golden moments: precious treasure.
Fill your box beyond its measure.

[i]cluegirl: Gotta get out of bed, get a hammer and a nail...

CONTRACTORS AT LAST!!!

Okay. That's enough of Capslock Clue for today.

The point being, that at fucking LAST the damned missing sill plate is going to be repaired/replaced! They're down in my basement right now, scavenging our lumber supply to build the temporary support wall that will take up the weight from the jack. Sirocco is, as usual, supervising. This is mainly because I refused to let her escape through the basement door while they had it open to bring tools in, and so she's frustrated at her lack of snow-romping. She will also, I believe, survive the emotion.

In other news, Godric has officially lost his fucking mind. Even on the calming drops as suggested by a friend, he STILL sprayed last night... are you ready for this shit?... ON THE KITCHEN COUNTER!!! I swear, I'm gonna have to talk to the vet about catheterizing him permanently or something if he can't be made to stop this! Ouf... lookit all those damned exclamation points. Must do better.

So I had an unintentionally racist moment yesterday that's still bugging me today. In Tempus Fugitive, I rolled across a brief comment where I found myself in need of a Hebrew slang word that might be used to express utter and complete disgust with a creature one couldn't even consider sentient. Something like the Norse word "Nithing". This was complicated by the fact that the person speaking is a 700 year old vampire, and wouldn't use modern slang all that much. But somehow in the asking of the question, I managed to come across as though I were referring to Jews as some alien species who needed anthropological explanation for any Goy to understand. *Facepalm* The slight, it was unintentional, but the apology, it is genuine. Offense wasn't what I meant to give, and the co-chatter was generous as to not take it, but I still feel an apology is warranted for my clumsiness. And so, I'm sorry, truly.

...Aaand the banging begins. This is the part that's always somewhat freaky. I really hope they don't break that window they're working beneath.

In other news, my black rubber rain boots are, apparently, garbage. I got them because they were the only ones that weren't overly twee, but have had them less than three months, and they have begun to leak. The rubber's split in not less than three places, and all where I can't get to it on the inside without ripping out the lining. Duct tape to the rescue! I'm seriously considering cleaning the whole foot area up, and then covering the boot from toe to top with the stuff, just to stave off any further disappointments. Wouldn't be the first time I've worn silver boots in hard weather. (For those who aren't of the Rennie persuasion, I managed to get a pair of metallic silver Doc Martens approved for Queen Titania's rain costume one year at Hawkwood. It was a silly place.)

And now I am out of babble for the nonce.
Ergo, I go.
AVAUNT!

Note: this is the part of the conclusion to the de-aged Snape plot. Almost there!

The last Christmas carol had been sung. The visitors had gone home, and Remus had fed and changed and bathed his son. Andromeda had gently declined their offer of dinner, and promised to owl Hogwarts so they would know where Severus was.

Now they stood outside her house in the dark winter night. A man, laden with packages from a toy store, hurried past.

"I would have done that," Remus murmured. "There's no better time to be a child than at Christmas. Making it good for Teddy - "

"You still can." Severus squeezed his hand. "We still can."

"Yes."

December 9, 2009
Title: Parody Denied
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Severus, Lucius, Narcissa, Bella, Rodolphus, the Dark Lord,
Rating: G
Words: 200
Warning: Suggested mental infidelity (Bella/Rodolphus)
Prompt: Santa's Lap

It was the annual Death Eater Yuletide party and one of the attendees had recklessly drunken more than was decorous. Bella was petitioning the Dark Lord for added entertainment. Beside the fireplace Severus was decidedly sober. He stood next to Lucius, who was sipping an almost-clear Reisling, raising it elegantly at occasional intervals. Narcissa was at his other side with her sparkling mineral water and an open cucumber sandwich on thin rye.

"We can do it in parody of the Muggles, my Lord, and it will be fun! Not the presents of course... Just let us sit in your lap and tell you what we would like for Christmas. I'm sure we all want the same thing." Bella looked around at them in imperious assumption.

Rodolphus frowned into his scotch and soda across the room. He knew very well what his wife wanted for Christmas, from the way she was looking at the Dark Lord's lap.

"It would be a boon," she wheedled.

The Dark Lord frowned, and everyone stilled as he paused. Only Lucius' hand tightened on Severus' shoulder. It was not, Severus thought, in warning, but in shared offence and emotion. Father Christmas was sacrosanct to them.

"No. That would be ridicule of a great wizard, not Muggles." The Dark Lord rose to leave the company.

Somehow, he knew.

The couple had Audrey Prince's blessing. That was obvious from the song, and the smiles, and the mere fact the doyenne of the Tories had unbent enough to accept a cup of tea and a few early Christmas cookies from a disowned Pureblood and her werewolf son-in-law.

"It's good to be a child," Severus said, eyeing the gifts. "Especially at Christmas. Gran, I - "

"You need not apologize, Severus, unless your - friend - plans to leave his son home on Boxing Day," said Madam Prince. She nodded to Andromeda and Remus. "I trust that meets with your approval?"

[i]cluegirl: Like a Lightbulb!!!

Huh.

I seem to find myself in need of a script doctor.
This is extremely unusual for me, since my outlining addiction -- by some people's standards, my outlines are actually on par with first drafts, -- is so complete. But in this one, I gave the story its head, and have been sort of sketching in the plot arc as I go. And the main thread of plot is great. It's tight, taut, smutty, and satisfying... it's just there's a flaw right... there. And I cant' see a satisfying way to sort it out from where I'm standing.

So what I need, is someone who can get in and wrangle with me on it. And it can't be someone sensitive, because there's gonna be a lot of 'mmm, no that's not right.' in the proceedings. (I've been chewing on this one awhile, y'see, and have exhausted all the easy answers. So unless someone comes to it with an 'Eureka,' there'll probably be a lot of ideas kerbed before the whole thing's sorted out.

And I refuse -- REFUSE, do you hear me? -- to junk this story over a little thing like not knowing who the bloody hell Severus would be narrating his first person passages to! This thing will not 'appen!

IN OTHER NEWS!

I have finally finished my case studies, which means that's one more obstacle removed from between me and my certification as a crime victim's advocate. It is also a load off my plate for this coming Holiday season, thanks everso!

We got the floor cleaned up on the inside of the wall we'll be ripping apart on Wednesday night, and got the resin paper down to (belatedly) protect the wood floor from the plaster and bricks that'll be coming down onto it once we get the demolition started. The contractors will be here on Thursday morning to jack up the house, install a temp support wall, and replace the rotted timbers. (We told him we didn't want any extras like joist replacement or whatnot. He was okay with that.) And that means that with a judicial day off usage on Dominus' part, and with some meteorological luck, we'll be able to get the clapboard up and caulked this weekend, and get some insulation into the wall from the inside as well. It's distantly feasible that we could get a coat of primer onto the boards if the weather warms up, but if not, I know a little trick for low-temp painting that might just work. (You mix some ammonia into the paint, and that lowers the drying temp significantly. Should work out okay, given that the painting's to be done outside, where venting won't be an issue.)

Preparations have begun for the Mandala House Solstice party, as well.
I invited a lot of people whom I had no expectation of attending, simply because I wanted them to know they'd be thought of on that night, and missed. That does lead to a rather distressing start to the RSVP process though, since it's those folks who reply first. (After all, if you might come, you've got to do some checking of other things first, usually. If you won't come, you usually know it straight off.) So right now my party is a great weltering mass of "Nope!" I have faith that this will change somewhat when the time draws nearer to actually celebrate. And if not, sulking is still an entirely viable option.

Okay now... that's enough blogging from me. Time to go and get John and Julian out of the damned car before one of them eats the other one.
Ciao!

[i]sylvanawood posting in [i]snapedom: The December Challenge

This month, we'll take it easy.

Recently, someone told me that there'll be a fest for Severus' 50th birthday on the forum Why Snape?

(It may be an alternative for those of you who don't want to participate at our Severus Big Bang Birthday Bash fest. Why Snape? isn't affiliated with us nor am I in any way involved with it.)

And in that sense I borrow the question:

The December Challenge:

Why Snape?

Tell us what draws you to the character, whether you find him interesting, love him, admire him or why else you are hanging out on a Snape site.

And enjoy the busy holidays.

(I did not forget your banners. They will come. Whistles innocently)

[i]territesting posting in [i]snapedom: Lily’s Reaction to Sirius’s Furry Little Joke

Here’s another thing I’d like to drag out from the depths of Sailorum’s Snily post-and-commentary for independent attention.

Most often, when I read something by someone with a viewpoint strongly different from mine, it clarifies my understanding of how they view (or misinterpret—evil grin) canon, but it has a hard time altering MY view. But sometimes someone offers an insight that just reverses things for me.

The insight that Lily almost certainly was a prefect in SWM altered my perceptions of her behavior very negatively.

However, one of Sailorum’s responses to a comment has the exact opposite effect on my view of Lily in the Mulciber/Potter argument. Like 00sevvie and others, I’d felt Lily to be cold and distant in that scene, not responding like a true friend, for not expressing overt sympathy and horror over her supposed best friend’s near-murder (and for thinking Mulciber’s failed prank, whatever it was, on a par with death-by-werewolf).

But I see now that I was falling into the old trap of assuming that what I knew, a character knew, and judging them on the basis of my knowledge. (Just like all the fen who think that OF COURSE Snape knew all along that the Dark Lord was an Evul sociopath—I mean, it’s obvious in retrospect, right? How could Sev not have known at 15 that this Dark Lord wizard was Bad News?) I’ve been committing that same sin with Lily.

For here’s )

Note: this is the part of the conclusion to the de-aged Snape plot. Almost there!

Severus, still humming "Once in Royal David's City," and Remus, flushed and smiling, stood in the entryway. Audrey Prince, hat adorned with fwooper plumes, smiled indulgently at them. Clearly the three of them had resolved whatever needed to be resolved.

"Madam Prince! How good to see you!" Narcissa, ever perfect, swept past her sister to air-kiss the elderly woman. "This is my sister and - "

"Of course." Madam Prince nodded to Severus, who produced a small sack from his pocket and unshrank it. "Gifts for young Theodore. It is good to be young, and never better than at Christmas."

[i]lore: Snupin Rec: Open Hand

Open Hand by Anonymous in [profile] hp_yule_balls, NC17, ~6000 words.
Summary: After the war, Severus must decide whether or not he wants to pick up where he left off with Remus, and Remus helps him make up his mind.
Warnings: not canon compliant in that Snape and Lupin survive the war and Teddy isn't Remus' biological child, mutual masturbation, use of Legilimency during sex, desperation, established relationship

I will get to my darling [profile] snupin_santa soon, but I didn't feel it was right to make my Yule Balls writer wait for me. I don't often talk about gifts I've received in my journal, mainly because of my own hang-ups. It feels like I'm bragging even when I'm perfectly fine and think nothing of people talking about their own gifts. And this post doesn't mean I didn't appreciate or feel motivated to post about gifts I've received in the past or will receive in the future. I'm just wide awake and the moment has struck me when usually, it doesn't. Anyway, I'm a twisted little monkey sometimes.

Open Hand is a great "just after the war ends" story with Severus convalescing and Remus at his side. They'd had a relationship in the past, but Remus insisted on marrying Tonks for his own reasons, and they'd been not seeing each other for most of the last year of the war. Now what?

I'll tell you -- some h/c that's light on the hurt and heavy on the comfort, just the way I like it, and some great character moments and some emotionally satisfying Legilimency intimacy. The relationship between the men registers as particularly masculine to me (most stories don't ping me either way, so it's something I will notice if it swings one way or the other), with Remus' characterization adding to that sense quite a bit.

It's only 6000 words, it's well written, it's hot. But don't you dare read it unless you plan to leave Santa a comment when you're done. ^_^

love, lore

[i]odogoddess: all righty then...

Gacked from wednesday42 (*waves*);

You know how sometimes people on your friendslist post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating HIM/HER? Since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.
