fic rec: The After-Christmas Tree (Severus, gen, G)

The After-Christmas Tree (or here on LJ) by [info]janus/verus_janus (gen/Severus-centric, G, 974 words)
Not every house has a Christmas tree. Not every house has Father Christmas and stockings, plum pudding and a roast turkey. [...] There was a small house in Spinner's End, down at the end of the street near the river that had none of these.

*flails* This is a scant thousand words of sheer sad delight. I know that's a strange-sounding emotion, but there it is. It makes me want to cry and smile and the images are so simple but so powerful. I would love an illustration of the scene of little Sev in his house waving at his purloined discarded tree with its gathered tinsel and single forgotten bauble.

fic: Cold Hands, Warm Hearts (Severus, Aurora Sinistra, gen/friendship/something, PG)

Happy birthday, [info]lilyevans_snape!

I be a sneaky pirate ninja. I've been biting my tongue about this for several days instead of hinting, even resisting the considerable temptation when you remarked on the Sev/Reg drabbles about "Christmas come early". Hee.

Title: Cold Hands, Warm Hearts
Pairing/Characters: young Professor Severus Snape, Aurora Sinistra; brief mention of past Severus/Lily
Genre: Gen? Friendship? Whatever the het equivalent is of "pre-slash"?
Rating: PG
Words: ~3600
Summary: Oooooo, Severus, I think she likes you!
Warnings/Contains: Unbetaed, unBritpicked, not as snappily witty as my usual fare (hah! hear that? that's the sound of one's own horn tooting), just a random bit of fantasy I tried not to think too hard about (but still failed in some places; you know me).

playlist meme (6 Severus/Regulus drabbles)

A while back I tried doing this meme:

1. Pick a character/pairing/fandom.

2. Turn your music player on and turn it on random/shuffle.

3. Write a drabblet/ficlet related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it's over. No lingering afterward, no matter how whacked out your drabble seems.

I wanted to do ten, as it seems a usual number, but it seems I'm never going to get around to finishing it. Some of them are pretty dumb, besides, so I won't be posting those (never minding the rules), but here's six. G - PG-13 (or maybe the lightest of possible Rs), some genish and some suggestive, bits of humour, no warnings except some drunkenness in one. Read more... )

So sweet. I love Severus's glasses and apparent age and the contented familiarity in him ruffling Harry's hair.

Connichi 2009 - poking Snape
by ~HowellJenkinsSama on deviantART

There are some other photos of this interesting Snape cosplay as well. Normally I would say that nose prosthesis takes it over the top into slightly cruel caricature, but somehow it really brings this particular costume together.

The Long Road
by ~TGP on deviantART

I loved the moody colour and how a frightened child grows into a sullen teenager, a disaffected adult, and then a total mystery with his back turned to the viewer. Very simply drawn but quite effective.

The Banes of Her Existence
by *Vizen on deviantART

This made me LOL IRL. Just look at Severus and Minerva's poses and expressions, and Albus's drink with the umbrella! Poor woman, being headmistress and sharing an office with those two...

now for reals yo, for [info]mimimanderly!

([info]nehalenia and [info]feyandstrange, I haven't forgotten you, honest.)

OK, Mimi, take two on this. I felt pretty lame about the first attempt, especially since I had asked for a prompt for a birthday present, for f's sake. The comic-book idea was fun (and is recycled here), but the rest of it, frankly, flopped. Although I don't say that I wouldn't love to see drawings of Severus having something to do with spun sugar or recycling. ;)

This, on the other hand, kind of got away from me in terms of length, but you can't have everything. So without further ado, Five things that Severus Snape does only when he's absolutely certain that he's alone and unobserved (even by the portraits!) that he would be mortified if word got out about.

Brooding, bathing, leisure reading, practicing handwriting, and painting. )

for [info]coyotegoth from this prompt, Five reasons (apart from the obvious) that Albus Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid will never travel on vacation together again.

Warning: contains very bad attempt at writing Hagrid's accent.

1. Rubeus's bathroom habits. I advise you not to inquire further.

2. Professor Dumbledore's, er, washin' 'abits. Yeh don' wan' ter know.

3. Whilst I applaud Hagrid's enthusiasm, in retrospect the safari was a mistake.

4. Sometimes I think the Professor doesn' want me to expand me understandin' of me own subject. How am I supposed to teach anythin' without, yeh know, live examples? 'E wouldn'-a hurt no one, tha' friendly little bugger.

5. Can't risk a repeat of The Racquetball Court Incident.

Mon, Mar. 16th, 2009, 01:34 pm

for [info]lunylucy from this prompt, 4 Every Flavor Beans flavors that Dumbledore hates and 1 that he loves.

1. Lemon custard. Ariana always was very fond of the stuff.

2. Mown grass. Not only is he not a cow, but it is sometimes a bit difficult to convince people of the truth of one's vast stores of mysterious wisdom while sporting lips and a tongue that look like a ripe lime. A reputation for eccentric brilliance only goes so far.

3. Candied violet. Gellert had once presented him with a small box of the real sort, smartly done up in silver paper and tied with a thin purple ribbon. He'd mentioned idly with a subtle wink that a curious piece of Muggle folklore considered it an infallible love charm.

4. Salt and vinegar. "Hate" might be a strong word, though; more like "irritation". He can never manage to find the fish-and-chip-flavoured ones to go with.

5. Christmas pudding. He especially likes to top a real Christmas pudding with some of these and then smother it in brandy before setting the whole thing on brilliant pink fire. A thing worth doing is worth overdoing, after all, especially at Christmas.

Have a few recs that have been sitting around in my to-rec folder for a jillion years.

The Right Decision by [info]unbroken_halo
(200 words, PG)
Double drabble about Severus making the choice and taking the Mark, the first from Voldemort's POV and the second from Severus's.

Highly Toxic by [info]midnight_ljc
(~530 words plus art, PG-13, mabye barely NWS if a girl in a bra or hints of teenage sexuality are a problem)
Older Severus/Lily (2006). Yummy and tender and sad. I especially like the way he's kissing her cheek and jaw in the last picture. I've had to re-read this a few times before the narrative actually fell together in my head, because it's told kind of backwards, but I love its dreamy quality.

The Raven by [info]atdelphi
(~800 words, NC-17)
"A play on Poe's famous poem: Filch receives a rather persistent late-night visitor."
Severus/Argus Filch. Wait, wait, come back! It's only a parody, and a hilarious and very well-made one at that. And somehow, even though it's potion-induced and the, er, unfortunate victim of the blast radius is Filch, somehow Severus's insatiability still comes off really hot.

Trusting in Fanfiction by gmweasley
(~475 words, soft R)
Severus/Remus. While we're on the subject of humorous poetry, yeah? This one is original, not parody, but is also quite well-constructed. In brief, I LOLed.
It occurred to Remus one fine day: his past was unrewarding
So off he set to start anew; in short, he stopped Marauding.
He said goodbye to all he'd known; decided to commit.
At last he found (or so it's told) our favourite Greasy Git.

Five things Regulus Black regrets in his life and one thing that he doesn't by [info]curia_regis
(~1300 words, PG)
This is great in so many ways. I love the Severus/Regulus content, the hints that from the first he doesn't really want to do what his family apparently expects him to, and the quiet bravery. The little bit of Severus expounding excitedly on a potion to little Regulus because he made the mistake of getting him started on the topic is just precious.

Can't Run But by [info]kaydeefalls
(~5850 words, PG-13)
Gen with Regulus and Draco in alternating sections, eventually dealing with the locket Horcrux. Older stuff again (2005), set after the end of HBP, so canon-shafted now (albeit not that badly). I like the echoes between Regulus and Draco, and Severus gets some great lines in this:
Snape looks over at him sharply. "A coward?" he repeats. "A coward would have exulted at the opportunity before him. Dumbledore was a weak, helpless old man, without even the strength to run. A coward could have killed him."
"So what does that make me?" Draco snaps, his face flushing with shame. "Less than a coward?"
"It makes you a human being," Snape replies shortly.

Players by [info]snegurochka_lee
(~3500 words, NC-17)
"If Grimmauld Place is a stage, and all the men and women in it merely players, then there really isn't any reason for Snape to take it all so seriously, now is there?"
Again a bit older (mid 2007). Severus/Sirius with plenty of hate in, although it's that special kind of Snacky hate that has clearly got something else going on inside of it. Focuses on how, as Sirius observes, Severus's entire existence is this constructed stage show, and how Severus gets off sexually on that. Characterization is razor sharp on both; I love Sirius's bad attitude and the aside that "Remus isn't any fun any more".

and now for some art recs

Regulus - dark by fishbizkit
(Regulus, G)
I like the way he's depicted under dim lighting here, which makes his grey eyes almost seem to glow. He's determined and resigned, and looks his young age. The two dark sketches on the background seem alive in that curious way that quick sketches can.

S.B. by melete
(Sirius, G)
Watercolour Sirius, leather jacket and all. He's got a swagger to him that I like, and his haircut is very much like I picture it.

Sirius, for Anita by slytherkins
(Sirius, G)
Forget that guy they showed us in the OotP film (I mean what); this I can believe as the best-looking bloke in school. Has that pretty-boy pureblood thing down pat.

Time by [info]saridout
(Severus/Harry, PG)
Tender depiction of Harry's death, and what comes after. Great job with the firelight in the scenes. I could swear someone actually wrote a fic inspired by this, but I can't remember where I read it...

PERIL in the Dragon's Lair! by [info]nimori
(Severus/Harry, artist rates it "R lite", but I'd call it PG, even with Ginny's comic-book boobs -- definitely worksafe)
This killed me. I said in my comment, "This is so awesome I may have just got awesome poisoning", or something like that. Harry, Severus, and Ginny as they would be if printed on cheap pulp in four colours, Spandex, ridiculous storyline and all.

What I Did On My Summer Vacation by [info]littleblackbow
(Severus/Harry, PG)
This doesn't need any more recs but I'm going to do it anyway. It's that good. Harry and Severus are drawn back together through Harry's son and Severus's daughter (who is darling with Daddy's nose). Have a box of tissues handy; you'll need them. (This "universe" has its own IJ asylum, [info]smiths_potters, which includes another video if I remember right, and more stories and art.)

Solace by (still anon, real soon now though)
(Severus/Sirius, PG)
A beautiful piece, clean and fine. So much black hair is, of course, a visual treat (I freely admit this is one of the things that initially attracted me to this pairing), but the urgency and need comes through too. It's meant to be set during the summer after GoF, which makes me wonder if I should be spending more time thinking of that time period re: writing Snack.

Clandestine by [info]nk_aoede
Regulus/James, PG.
I like the way James seems to have been caught by surprise, and the urgency in Regulus's body language. Bonus points in the way this Regulus seems very similar to the one in my head, especially the way his hair is falling with his head tilted slightly back like that. This isn't a pair I would normally think to ship, but a drawing like this has me a little intrigued...

yet another potions master by coraxlovegothica
Severus, G.
Something is a bit off about the facial structure here, but I like his body language, his hair, his gaze.

Severus Smiles by ianmsquee
Severus, G.
Ha ha, yes, well, for certain values of the word "smile". One of the best arched eyebrows in recorded history. And, as I am become a fundamentalist about nose shape in Snape drawings, I will say that the nose has a bridge shape that looks reasonable to me, and without being ridiculous, is still clearly rather large.

art rec: Prince Family Portrait, 1975 (gen, G)

Dudes! You should totally check out the awesome drawing [info]venturous made for my drabble Family Obligations: Prince Family Portrait, 1975! She and I were paired up in the [info]snapedom Summer Fest, but I wound up withdrawing due to an excess of suckitude. Still, she went ahead and did this anyway (which was posted as "gift to fest"). I am so taken with everyone's expressions. Severus is clearly not enjoying things (which was the point) and his uncle (Eileen's brother) looks like a serious piece of wizard. Even at this size the little details in his grandmother Prince's eyes are amazing.
