fic and art recs (lots of various stuff)

Snarry 3
by ~Umino-aka-Morskaya on deviantART

So sweet. I love Severus's glasses and apparent age and the contented familiarity in him ruffling Harry's hair.

Connichi 2009 - poking Snape
by ~HowellJenkinsSama on deviantART

There are some other photos of this interesting Snape cosplay as well. Normally I would say that nose prosthesis takes it over the top into slightly cruel caricature, but somehow it really brings this particular costume together.

The Long Road
by ~TGP on deviantART

I loved the moody colour and how a frightened child grows into a sullen teenager, a disaffected adult, and then a total mystery with his back turned to the viewer. Very simply drawn but quite effective.

The Banes of Her Existence
by *Vizen on deviantART

This made me LOL IRL. Just look at Severus and Minerva's poses and expressions, and Albus's drink with the umbrella! Poor woman, being headmistress and sharing an office with those two...

a few recs

Now and Then by [info]sweet_lemmon (Harry/Hermione, (strong) R, NWS)
"WTF?" you may be thinking, since this is so not the kind of thing I am usually interested in. I said as much in my comment, too, but I liked the soft shading in this piece and the sensuality and drape of Hermione's body in the second (third?) panel.

So after that strange interlude, here, let me make it all better:

DH Chapter 33 by lilyhbp (Severus, Lily, G)
Illustrations for the scene outside the Gryffindor portrait in "The Prince's Tale" are about a dime a dozen gross, but Severus's downcast expression in this is just the greatest thing ever, even though with his hair hiding most of his face you can hardly see it. I recommend taking a look at the detail in which you can more closely see their faces. The other thing about this piece is that it really shows how much she's advanced as an artist over just a few years when you compare it to the original piece that used the pose for Severus she mentions in the artist's notes. (She's taken that one down, but you could also compare it to Head of Slytherin or Best Friends, for example.)

And now for some ancient fic recs from holiday fests )

fic: Lost Causes (part 1)

Since I've already gone and violated taboos today, here's something else that contravenes several of what I have deduced to be the commandments of fanfic:

1. Thou shalt have thy work betaed (at least if it's over a certain length).
2. Thou shalt have thy work Britpicked (where applicable).
3. Thou shalt not post WIPs unless thou dost not mind losing a lot of thy possible readership (the many who refuse to read WIPs until they're completed).

I just want to seem like I'm doing something, yeah?

Title: Lost Causes
Characters/Pairings: this part Lily/James talked about, Sirius/Remus hinted at, Severus, Regulus
Rating: this part PG
Words: this part ~3100
Summary: Second chances are all well and good, but sometimes things really are lost. Maybe. Depending on your definition of "lost".
Warnings: As said above, unbetaed, unBritpicked, and WIP. Future parts will contain both slash and het, strong language, and drug use.

art recs

things i'm gonna do (G)
A seriously gorgeous drawing of Regulus with the locket. I mean like wow.

Snack (PG for silly kissyface)
*sporfle* Yeah. Snack: it's kinda like that.

Severus HBP (G)
Apparently mostly lighting practice, but I like the moody atmosphere and young Severus's (he looks maybe 12-13 to me) morose expression.

The First Wand (G)
G for Good God That's So Cute, that is. Little Lily and Severus getting their wands.

Snape, memories (G)
Just a simple sketch, but I love his melancholy expression, and the shape of his nose is oddly beautiful.

At the Top of the Hill (G)
Severus kneeling on that dark windy hilltop, offering Dumbledore "anything". All the fine lines give this the look of an engraving. His cloak and hair being whipped about in the wind are wonderful.

Boys Night In (NC-17 and very NWS)
Severus/Sirius/James: it tastes better when it's consensual (at least that seems to be the intent). [info]acatnamedeaster has a gift for pleasured facial expressions, I think. I dare you to look at Severus's face and his hand grabbing the sheet and not drool. (Also: Sirius, lol get a hairstylist.)

abandonfic #4

(abandon fic! abandon fic!)

Title: (none)
Characters: Lily
Rating: G
Words: 189
Warnings: None

Why I give up: Eh. This just bores me. The point of this was to have her catch some amusement or longing, have them meet later, and have him express an emotion that could only possibly be expressed with the mouth, which is wanting to kiss her, like, durhay. But I ain't feelin' it somehow.

Many people are given to express insincere emotions... )

"mired in adolescence"

Reposted with permission from [info]atdelphi, from this thread in [info]persepolis130's journal. I just thought these were some really insightful comments:

Just chiming in as someone who likes to ship Snape with Dumbledore, Filch, McGonagall, Hagrid, or Slughorn. I had to fudge some of my answers - for instance, none of those listed pairings would make me spew, and none of the Lily options really described my view of the relationship (that is to say, looking at the character, I see a difference between how Snape would feel about Lily and how he would think he feels. To me, a defining point of the character is how his position at Hogwarts has kept him mired in his adolescence, living on grudges and wrongs, stunted emotionally and possessing a distorted self-awareness). In short, I think what he's in love with by the end of the series has more to do with ideals, guilt, himself, and lost opportunities than any real woman, but they all go by the name Lily. [emphasis mine]

I've always enjoyed the mirroring in PoA, where we see Snape and Sirius set up as the least mature adults in the series - Snape for his pettiness, Sirius for his recklessness, both for their obsession with the past - and you realise that just as Sirius is emotionally arrested at twenty-one from being locked away at that age, so is Snape. The presence of the Dementors at Hogwarts really needles in that image of Hogwarts as Snape's Azkaban, a place where he's forced to relive his unhappy memories. Then in HBP we get that chilling note of finding out why
[emphasis original] Snape keeps asking for the Defence position - because he knows that the Defence professor never comes back the next year.

FWIW what she says about "mirroring" with Sirius is one of the reasons I like to ship those two, actually. :)

....

At first I thought this would be a drawing of Severus going to visit Lily a little after Harry's birth, ...
But later I thought... what if the story had been different?
that's all fine
it's the last line that gets me
"What if James had eaten a bunch of crazy monkeys and Lily had married Severus?"
i can only suppose it is some strange spanish idiom
i'm pleased i got like 2/3 of it without having to use a translator though
and this is subjunctive mood, the "what ifs", which is full of weird transformations in spanish
but yeah
CRAZY MONKEYS?
i'm picturing some kind of weird scene out of the Jungle Book, deep in the forbidden forest
"and alas, James Potter was devoured by Shere Khan, the end"
well
for certain values of "alas"
(aw. that was mean.)

ah, music. a cracktasticalness beyond all we do here.

Another late-morning, not-quite-awake-so-not-quite-a-dream image for the That's Crack but I Still Wish I Could Draw file:

Four-piece band. Lily on vocals, Severus on bass, Sirius on guitar, and James on drums. (Yeah, that last one kinda made me *eyebrow* too.)

I think this is the fermented love-child byproduct of yesterday's driving-home-from-work flash-visual of Severus playing that über-sexy bass line in "Number One Crush", that Garbage poster in [info]enotsola's room with Shirley Manson's really red hair, and that actual dream that I had last year where Severus was a 60s folk guitarist and I dreamt his picture on an album cover (and let me tell you, he looks weird with 60s-style fonts and psychedelic graphics alongside).
